Full Description
A dam to a mill pond surviving within Lower Wood as a large earthwork up to 10 metres wide and seven metres high. A platform cut into the valley side and located to the immediate north of the earthwork may suggest the location of the mill building or other features associated with it. It is possible that the breach in the dam coincides with the location of the mill wheel. Other mill sites of a comparative date seem to indicate that the mill building was located on the dam.
<1> Turner R C, 1986, Edge - Notes on the Archaeological & Historic Landscapes (Unpublished Report). SCH1099.
A massive earthen dam in Lower Wood. Where broached by the stream, it is c.10m wide at its base and c.7m high. A most impressive stucture, but no mill building or leat could be seen to be associated with it. Possibly the earliest mill feature of the group in Edge.
<2> Burdett, P. P., 1777, A Survey of the County Palatine of Chester (Maps and Plans). SCH113.
Probably one of the three mills depicted on this map.
<3> Environment Agency, 2003-2020, Environment Agency LiDAR Surveys, D0063134 22/03/2006 & D0063131 22/03/2006 (Digital Archive). SCH7819.
The earthwork observed by R Turner (see 1) is clearly visible in the DTM version of the LIDAR data. An earthwork platform cut into the valley side and located to the immediate north of the earthwork may suggest the location of the mill building or other features associated with it.
<4> Various, Various, Oral communication to the HER, Edwards R, 23/03/2018 (Oral Communication). SCH2330.
It is possible that the breach in the dam coincides with the location of the mill wheel. Other mill sites of a comparative date seem to indicate that the mill building was located on the dam.
