Full Description
At some time before 1946, Newstead explored four small areas in his garden at 67 Handbridge (1). A paved structure was found c 33m east of the street frontage and c 16.5m from the southern boundary of Ebury Place. The paved area was 4.9m long and constructed of a single layer of roughly hewn sandstone blocks, the upper surface of which had signs of having been worn and rounded edges. The blocks were embedded within a relatively thin layer of grit, overlying the natural boulder clay. Samian ware and coarse ware were found, including a fragment of a Samian dish of Form 31 and a fragment of a frilled vessel (1). The structure resembled similar features found in the area, but its function could not be identified.
