Full Description
Work carried out in St Thomas Street in the early part of the 20th century identified a small quantity of Roman pottery along with evidence of iron working. Thomas Street itself no longer exists, however, it formed part of a late Victorian railway suburb approximately 150m east from the north-east angle of the Roman fortress and probably just beyond the canabae. Construction work in the southern part of the street identified an occupation layer approximately 0.80m below the then ground level containing substantial quantities of charcoal filled soil and numerous deposits of disintegrated iron suggestive of an iron working site in the area. (1)
