Monument record 16096 - Excavated Bold/Widnes township boundary

Archaeological evaluation trenching was undertaken on a 42 acre greenfield site, adjacent to Lunt's Heath Road, Widnes, prior to residential development. The archaeological evaluation comprised two trenches measuring 2m by 25m positioned across a former township boundary, with potential medieval origins, between the townships of Bold and Widnes. The boundary is depicted on nineteenth century historic mapping (Tithe map of Burtonwood and OS first edition map, sources 2 and 3). A single linear feature, probably a boundary ditch of post medieval date, was recorded in Trench 2. Two fills were recorded from the ditch, the earliest of which contained late post-medieval pottery and glass fragments; the later upper fill contained twentieth-century pottery and a glass fragment. No medieval or early post medieval finds were recovered potentially indicating regular cleaning of the ditch to facilitate drainage.
