Monument record 16058 - Site of Fields Farm, Houndings Lane, Sandbach

Level 2 historic building record produced in 2023 for Fields Farm, Houndings Lane, Old Mill Road, Sandbach, Cheshire CW11 4EQ, prior to demolition and re-development. The report considers the farmhouse, an outbuilding/barn and a stable block. The L-shaped farmhouse is built in rendered brick with blue slate roof and is of two phases, the north-east, rectangular wing being the oldest dating between 1772-1819, and the south-west wing which dates to the twentieth century. The earliest part of the outbuilding/barn is contemporary with the early phase of the farmhouse and was extended in the mid-nineteenth century. The stable block is a later addition dating to the later nineteenth century.

Early mapping including estate maps depict three buildings, the early phase rectangular farmhouse, the barn outbuildings and a building to the south-west of the farmhouse, the stable block is not shown. Documentary references to field names show that enclosure of the area occurred no later than the 17th century. The Fields Farm complex lies within the area of the apparent open field system. Ridge and furrow earthworks are visible in the area on air photographs.
