A pit containing Roman pottery was recorded in 2011/12 during excavation of a cable trench to the east of Little Moreton Hall. The pit was 0.35m deep and cut into the natural clay. It was filled with a grey silt containing frequent flecks of charcoal, a moderate amount of burnt stone, and five sherds of pottery from two vessels in local Wilderspool fabrics of 3rd to 4th century AD date. The Wilderspool wares were probably made by potters imitating the Black-Burnished vessels and supplied the military and civilian markets in the north-west. Roman activity in the area is previously unknown, so this is a significant find.
