An Archaeological Watching Brief carried out in 2021 during groundworks at land at Low Ridge, Burwardsley road, recorded two parallel linear features on the western side of the site. The ditches produced pottery of a Roman date of between the late 1st and early 3rd centuries AD and potentially represent the remains of a Roman timber building in the form of a beam slot and parallel eaves drip. A likely fire-pit/hearth was also recorded in the presumed interior of the timber structure but this remains undated. Bulk samples produced quantities of wood charcoal and showed the fuel source to be oak.
Evidence from elsewhere within Tattenhall suggests that there was a permanent Roman settlement in the vicinity with a focus around St Alban’s church and the Tattenhall Park primary school. The evidence from Low Ridge is likely the truncated remains of a Roman timber structure which could represent the southern limits of this settlement
