Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken in 2024 to the rear of 11 - 11A Grey Friars, Chester, in advance of conversion and extension of the building. During the excavation of a foundation trench behind the property, a late medieval ditch that intersected with what appeared to be a buried medieval ground layer was recorded; which had gradual to sloping sides with a concave base. The ditch measured circa 0.60m long by 0.84m wide and 0.32m in deep, it was aligned north to south and contained a single fill. Finds recovered from the fill of the ditch included frequent fragments of heavily degraded animal bone, medieval ceramic (generally dated to the late 13th/15th century), a piece of medieval floor tile, dressed sandstone fragments, metal slag, sub-rounded pebbles, and mortar. The presence of medieval floor tiles (14th/15th centuries), may indicate an association with the nearby Dominican Friary or Black Friars.
