Description
Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken in 2024 at 11 - 11A Grey Friars, Chester, CH1 2NW, in advance of conversion of an existing semi-detached dwelling comprising two flats, into a single dwelling house and erection of a single storey rear extension. The site is located within Chester city centre, and within the Conservation Area. During the excavation of a foundation trench behind the property, a late medieval ditch that intersected with what appeared to be a buried medieval ground layer was recorded. Finds recovered included medieval pottery, a piece of medieval floor tile, metal slag, and dressed sandstone fragments. The presence of medieval floor tiles (14th/15th centuries), may indicate an association with the nearby Dominican Friary or Black Friars. (1)
