Building record 15961 - Barn, Wimberry Moss Farm

A level 2 archaeological building survey was undertaken prior to the partial conversion of a barn at Wimberry Moss Farm, Rainow. The building appears to have been built as a shippon with hay loft over by Richard Lomas between 1881 and 1897. The doorways to the feeding passage were likely blocked in the 20th century when the concrete boskins and floor were inserted and the feeding process mechanised. The results of the survey will go towards developing a regional typology of farmhouses, barns and other rural vernacular buildings as an aid to academic
study and conservation management, as well as providing date for those seeking to discern intra-regional or temporal variations in the pattern of rural vernacular architecture.

The watching brief revealed the remains of a brick internal wall aligned east – west butting the eastern wall. The function of this was unclear, and only extended c. 1m into the room, suggesting it was for a stall rather than an internal cross wall, or the remains of an earlier building. However, no further remains were found to the south which may have been expected if it were for a stall. The bricks were machine made and the mortar appeared to be modern, suggesting it was of a 20th century date
