The remains of an east-west sandstone wall were recorded during archaeological investigationin 2023 to the rear of the Unionist Building. The wall measured a maximum of 3.2m long x 0.4m wide x 0.35m tall with returns northwards observed at its eastern and western ends continuing past the limit of excavation. The wall corresponds with the front of a residential property shown on the Ordnance Survey 1:500 Town Plan of 1873. The property formed part of St Martin’s Court, which comprised a row of five cottages. This part of the building was not cellared so is unlikely to have significantly impacted the surviving Roman strata within the site. Historic mapping suggests that the cottages fronting St Martin’s Court were demolished between 1959 and 1967.
