Full Description
<1> Salford Archaeology (part of Centre for Applied Archaeology), 2023, Unionist Building, Nicholas Street, Chester: Archaeological Evaluation Report, R4754 (Client Report). SCH9588.
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in 2023 at land at the rear of the Unionist Building, Nicholas Street, Chester (centred on NGR: SJ 340315 366015); it was limited to a single trench measuring 10m in length and 2m in width. The investigation revealed a layer containing Roman demolition material [008] at a depth of 1.9m below the current ground level. This layer had a maximum thickness of 0.3m and contained fragmented tegular, possible Tegular Mammata, imbrex, a single fragment of blue/green window glass, also a single fragment of animal bone. The presence of roof tile and window glass may suggest that a building stood nearby; the find of window glass may indicate a building of high status. This layer was preserved in situ and it is possible that the remains of a Roman building may be sealed by the deposit.
