Photograph (p.28) of excavations entitled 'Excavating iron furnaces at Highfield in 1972'. The same source includes two photographs of excavated Roman iron furnaces in Northwich (p.15) and discusses the process of iron production.

1972/3 - Rescue excavation by Northwich Archaeological Group (B.Curzon) at Highfield revealed evidence of iron furnaces. Evidence of an industrial complex on the eastern escarpment edge to the south-east of the fort.

Location taken to be that of the 19th century house labelled 'Highfield House' on OS first edition maps.
