<1> Peter de Figueiredo (Independent Consultant), 2008, Fiddler's Elbow, Mottram St Andrew, Cheshire: Conservation Statement, R4660 (Client Report). SCH9341.
Conservation statement produced in 2008 for 'Fiddler's Elbow', an eighteenth century estate cottage. Fiddler’s Elbow and the adjoining property known as 'Cherry Tree' are situated close to the main gateway to Mottram Hall and are likely to have originally formed part of the Mottram Hall Estate. Mottram Hall was built by William Wright, who bought the Mottram Estate in 1738. The Hall was intended for his son Randal, and must pre-date 1853, in which year Randal died aged 21. Cherry Tree has a carved stone inset in the front gable with the date 1742 and the initials JSB. Fiddler’s Elbow has some similarities to Cherry Tree, and also probably dates from the mid 18th century. The 1848 Tithe Map for Mottram St Andrew shows that the property at that time took the form of a simple rectangle parallel with the road, without any rear extensions or outbuildings. By1875, as recorded on the OS map of that date, a rear extension had been added. This is also shown on the 1910 OS maps. Records held by Macclesfield Borough Council show that the building was substantially changed c.1950, when the rear extension was demolished and replaced by the present extensions and the interiors were altered and refurbished.
