In 1828 Messrs. Nowell and Sons were reported to have opened a quarry on Bosley Cloud, with an associated railway to the line of the canal, to extract stone for the construction of a section of the canal including the locks at Bosley. In 1830 the Macclesfield Courier reported that the arch of the aqueduct carrying the canal over the River Dane had been completed and was constructed of a "very superior stone…procured from the adjacent mountain".
