Monument record 153/2/1 - Nowell and Sons Quarry

Please read our .

Summary

A former sandstone quarry opened circa 1828 to extract sandstone for the construction of the Macclesfield canal. The quarry appears to have had an incline which was used to transport the stone from the quarry near the summit of the hill. The stone was transported to the canal via a tramway (see CHER 153/2/2).

This map depicts an old quarry on the northern side of The Cloud. The quarry face is located on the southern side (up slope) of the quarry with spoil depicted to the north (down slope). A linear feature c.200 metres long and 5 metres wide runs downhill, on a north-west alignment, from the quarry workings to the junction of Cloud Side, Peover Lane and Tunstall Road. This possibly the remains of an incline.

Archaeological VATs created from this data clearly show the quarry and the associated spoil. The possible incline is also clearly visible and it seems to continue for a further 50 metres not the north-west of the road junction. Notably the base of the steeper part of the hillside lies c.45 metres further north-west and the base of the hill, significantly further.

In 1828 Messrs. Nowell and Sons were reported to have opened a quarry on Bosley Cloud, with an associated railway to the line of the canal, to extract stone for the construction of a section of the canal including the locks at Bosley. In 1830 the Macclesfield Courier reported that the arch of the aqueduct carrying the canal over the River Dane had been completed and was constructed of a "very superior stone…procured from the adjacent mountain".
