A level 2 building survey and photographic record was undertaken for Oak Cottage, Dooleys Lane, prior to alteration and renovation. The building is first shown on the 1841 Tithe Map for Pownell Fee, where it is depicted as a rectangular building orientated roughly north-south and occupying plot 947. The tithe schedule record lists the site as ‘Cottages and Gardens’, occupied by Peter Birtles and owned by a James Dooley. The survey found that the original structure was of a square plan and a later extension on to the northern gable created a rectangular building. This was evidenced by inspection of an area of collapse showing the northern part of the building butting up against the original gable wall. The fact that the tithe map appears to show the building as rectangular rather than square, suggests that both the original building and the northern extension were in existence by 1841. The survey also recorded a relatively large cellar, with five cold store recesses, located entirely beneath the northern extension. The cottage appears relatively unaltered on all subsequent Ordnance Survey mapping up to the present date.
