Full Description
<1> Headland Archaeology North West, 2021, Rudheath Lodge Quarry: Archaeological Watching Brief, R4539 (Client Report). SCH9114.
Two ditched boundaries were recorded during a watching brief, in 2021, in the area of Rudheath Lodge Quarry. The watching brief was targeted at the line of the historic parish boundary between Cranage and Allostock, which although it no longer survived as a surface feature within the watching brief area, still serves as the boundary between the modern counties of Cheshire East and Cheshire West and Chester.
The watching brief recorded a north-west/south-east aligned, ditched boundary, with an eastward turn. The boundary survived as a shallow infilled ditch circa 1 m wide and 0.2 m deep, cut into geological deposits. It was filled with naturally deposited sands and, finds contained within the fill, prove that it had been infilled at some point after the mid-19th century. This boundary cut an earlier boundary, orientated north-east/south-west. Both ditches had similar fills and both boundaries are depicted on the Tithe Map for Cranage Township (circa 1844) and also later Ordnance Survey Mapping (1882).
