Description
An archaeological watching brief was carried out in 2021 during top soil stripping at Rudheath Lodge Quarry, Cheshire post code CW4 8HJ, NGR 375450 369700. The watching brief was targeted at the line of the historic parish boundary between Cranage and Allostock, which although it no longer survives as a surface feature within the watching brief area, still serves as the boundary between the modern counties of Cheshire East and Cheshire West and Chester.
The boundary survived as a shallow infilled ditch c. 1 m wide and cut circa 0.2 m deep into geological deposits. It was filled with naturally deposited sands and finds contained within the fill prove that it had been infilled at some point after the mid-19th century. The only other feature present was a similar ditch which defined a field boundary shown on 19th century maps. (1)
