Two interlinked brick culverts were recorded during an archaeological evalutation in 2020 at City Place. They are thought to relate to drainage of low lying land, possibly in advance of the railway construction. The construction form of the culvert is suggestive of a late 18th century date.
Culvert [07], a substantial, domed brick structure, traversed the site in an east-west orientation. A secondary domed brick culvert [11], of the same date, was excavated in the south-eastern corner of the site, and formed a junction with culvert [07] and presumably fed into it, although the junction itself was not excavated.
Culverts [07] and [11] were located beneath two later buildings (CHER 11519 and 11520). One of the walls associated with building CHER 11520 had been built with the inclusion of a brick arch to accommodate the culvert. Culvert [11] had been truncated at its south-eastern extent, and partially removed. The resulting void had been backfilled with a black clinker deposit. The culvert's entrance had then been blocked with a sandstone flag.
