Full Description
<1> Oxford Archaeology North, 2019, Northgate Redevelopment, Phase 1, Hunter Street, Chester: Archaeological Evaluation Report, R4486 (Client Report). SCH8969.
In 2019, a thick deposit of dark soil, containing post medieval ceramics, animal bone, glass and ceramic building material, was recorded in four test pits (contexts 116, 217, 313 and 416) excavated in Hunter Street. In Test-pits 02 and 03 the dark soil demonstrably sealed Roman deposits (see CHER 8694 and 8695). In Test Pit 4, this post medieval soil deposit was present but excavation did not penetrate beyond it, consequently, it seems highly likely that here, also, the soil overlay significant archaeology.
