Please read our .

Summary

A thick deposit of dark soils was identified in three archaeological evaluation trenches, excavated in 2019 in the Grassy Knoll (also known as the ‘pocket park’) on the south side of Hunter Street. The soil deposit sealed earlier Roman stratigraphy. From the associated finds, the dark soils appear to have accumulated over a prolonged period, potentially, from the early post-Roman period to the post-medieval period.

A thick deposit of dark brown, loamy soils was identified in three archaeological evaluation trenches, excavated in 2019 in the Grassy Knoll (also known as the ‘pocket park’) on the south side of Hunter Street. The soil deposit sealed earlier Roman stratigraphy, including sandstone rubble (CHER 8700) and the remains of a sandstone wall (CHER 8701), both probably associated with barrack blocks of the legionary fort. From the associated finds, the dark soils appear to have accumulated over a prolonged period, potentially, from the early post-Roman period to the post-medieval period.
