Full Description
<1> Gwynedd Archaeological Trust, 2006, Forest Hill Quarry, Sandiway, Cheshire; Archaeological Watching Brief, R2634 (Client Report). SCH4750.
A single, small black, chert scraper of late mesolithic date was recovered in an unstratified context during an archaeological watching brief, in 2006, at Forest Hill Quarry, Sandiway. The fresh facets of the tool, together with the fact that it was found on the machined surface of the site, suggest that it has not been moved around by ploughing and was recovered close to its point of loss. One face retains the surface of the natural stone and its character suggests that the source stone was tabular rather than a pebble, this may indicate that the stone was quarried and the tool or stone was imported; the nearest source is Halkyn Mountain in Debighshire and also the Pennines.
