A watching brief during the renewal of gas main works in 2007 revealed significant medieval archaeological deposits on Welsh Row. The well-preserved remains of a timber plank surface were recorded at a depth of c.0.8m below current ground level. This surface comprised flush-butted timber planks each aligned longitudinally north-south and measuring between c.0.24m and 0.36m wide and approximately 0.1m thick. The surface extended for a distance of c.6.7m east-west but may have originally extended farther to the west where it was clearly disturbed by modern intrusions. Excavation of the pipe trench was terminated at the approximate level of the timber surface. Samples of the two timber planks located at the eastern end of the surface were taken for dendrochronological dating and species analysis. A sample from this track was dated by tree-ring analysis to the second half of the thirteenth century.
