Summary

A group of buildings, aligned on the north side of the canal, are depicted on the 1848 Tithe map. They are recorded in the tithe apportionment as 'six dwellings and a yard', owned by Thomas Large and tenanted by Williams Davies. Later OS mapping shows the buildings to be rows of cottages. The foundations of the two western-most cottages, originally part of a row of four, were excavated in 2018 prior to re-development of the site; partial remains of large, sandstone walls in north-south alignment were recorded, along with agricultural soils.

A group of buildings, aligned on the north side of the are depicted on the 1848 Tithe map (source 2). They are recorded in the tithe apportionment as 'six dwellings and a yard', owned by Thomas Large and tenanted by Williams Davies. Later OS mapping (source 3) shows the buildings to be rows of cottages. (See also sources 4 and 5 for discussion of the map evidence for the cottages)

The foundations of the two western-most cottages, originally part of a row of four, were excavated in 2018 prior to re-development of the site. Centred at SJ 41239 66657, partial remains of large, sandstone walls in north-south alignment were recorded, along with agricultural soils. The cottages had been partially truncated by the later Wesleyan chapel, located just to the west (CHER 11256).
