An archaeological evaluation was carried out in August 2018 at land off Trafford Street, Chester. Two trenches were excavated and both both revealed brick and sandstone walls associated with the nineteenth century housing known to have existed within the site. These were predominantly exterior walls of the courtyard and private yard areas. The Ordnance Survey 1874 map depicts the buildings and associated yards of Edward's Court and Prince's Court; the excavated features correlate well with the mapped data. There was also evidence of multiple mixed deposits of demolition, including rubble and burning.
Additonally, a series of geo-technical test pits excavated on the site as part of the development demonstrated that there were deep, back-filled areas, up to 20m in depth, representing post medieval quarrying activity. The buildings of Edward's Court and Prince's Court were built over the in-filled quarrying.
