Description

An archaeological evaluation was carried out in August 2018 at land off Trafford Street, Chester. The site lies outside of Chester’s historic core, in the Medieval and Early Post Medieval agricultural landscape. Seventeenth century Civil War Royalist defensive works are thought to cross the site. The two trenches excavated measured 2m by 25m and 2m by 30, they were positioned to target nineteenth century housing and quarrying also known to exist within the site. The evaluation did not locate any Civil War defensive works, but did identify the remains of nineteenth and twentieth century housing, with associated yard areas and outbuildings. Additionally, prior to the watching brief, a series of geo-technical test pits were excavated on the site and monitored by Rob Edwards of Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWaC). Deep backfilled areas were identified, up to 20m in depth, which are suggestive of Post Medieval quarrying in the area. (1)
