Summary

A chemical works is depicted, just to the north of Gaw End Lane, on Ordnance Survey mapping dating to 1882 but has disappeared by 1898, the date of subsequent mapping. The nature of these works is unknown, although they could have been associated ‘Harrington’s Bone Works’ to the south of Gawend Lane, which was engaged in the production of glue and fertilizers from animal by-products, or possibly with the ‘White Lead Works’ on the adjacent bank of the canal.
