Description
In 2021 archaeological trial trenches were excavated on land at Gaw Lane End, Macclesfield, prior to proposed development. The site comprises a farm with open fields, a small number of ponds and depressions and is bounded by London Road/A523 to the east and the Macclesfield Canal to the north, west and south-west.
Five trenches (1, 3, 5, 6 and 7) were excavated, trenches 2 and 4 were not excavated due to ground conditions. Archaeological remains were recorded in four trenches (trench 1, 3, 5 and 6); the remains comprised red brick walls with lime mortar, also a curving wall, built in dressed sandstone, with an adjoining rectangular red brick structure which has been interpreted as a probable oven or furnace. These features are thought to represent remains associated with 19th century chemical works. (1)
