An archaeological assessment (desk-based study and walkover survey) was undertaken in 1996 in advance of a proposed development at Gadbrook Park II, Northwich. In the most southerly field of the proposed development area, a substantial linear earthwork was recorded comprising a ditch, circa 4-5m wide and up to 1m deep, bounded by a bank to the west, approximately 3m in width and 0.3 m high. The current field boundary, comprising a hedge and fence line, lies in the bottom of the ditch. The date and original function of the earthwork is unknown, but is thought to represent an early boundary as well as forming the boundary between the townships of Shipbrook to the west and Rudheath to the east.
