Monument record 7872 - Post medieval leats, Carden Park west

Desk-based assessment and field survey undertaken in 1992 in advance of the development of Carden Park, Cheshire as a countryside leisure facility, including a golf academy. The remains of two potential leats, now dry, were recorded to the west of Carden Brook and to the north of Stretton Mill at the western edge of Carden Park. The more northerly is located at approximately SJ 4557 5373, it is flat-bottomed and straight-sided and around 2m wide and 1.5m deep. Immediately to the north of the junction between the mill race feeding Stretton Mill and Carden Brook is a rough, raised area and to the north of this there is a gully linking the more northerly leat to the brook. This gully appears to be cut by, and therefore pre-date, the mill race. It is suggested that the raised area may be the product of a number of attempts at water management and even possibly represents an earlier mill site.
