Full Description

<1> See map for surveyor, c.1837-51, Cheshire Tithe Maps and Awards, EDT 355/4 1839 (Maps and Plans). SCH3266.

The tithe map depicts the farm house, an L shaped range of buildings and two smaller outbuildings.

<2> Ordnance Survey, 1871-1882, Ordnance Survey County Series (Epoch 1) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ4350, 1874 (Maps and Plans). SCH2462.

This map depicts the farmhouse, but of the other buildings depicted on the tithe map (1), only the wester part of the L shaped range is still extant. A small outbuilding has been constructed against the northern field boundary to the immediate west of the farmhouse.

<3> Ordnance Survey, 1896-1898, Ordnance Survey First Revision County Series (Epoch 2) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ4350, 1898-1899 (Maps and Plans). SCH3848.

The farmhouse is the only building which was depicted on the tithe map which is still extant.

<4> Castlering Archaeology, 2015, Beech Farm, Caldecott, Cheshire: Archaeological Watching Brief, p.9 (Client Report). SCH7940.

No archaeological remains associated with the farm buildings depicted on the tithe map (1) were observed during a watching brief on this site in 2014 other than a layer of demolition material containing rough irregular shaped hand-made bricks made from local clays. It is probable that these derive from the L shaped range. The farmhouse is due for demolition.

<5> Dodgson J McN, 1970-2, 1981, The Place-Names of Cheshire, Part IV, p.62-3 (Book). SCH3228.

Possibly the "le Beche" (1319), "Beach in Calcot" (1591), and "the Batche" (1624) mentioned in documentary sources.

<6> Various, Various, Oral communication to the HER, Edwards R, 09/11/2016 (Oral Communication). SCH2330.

Photographs in (4) of the farmhouse show a late nineteenth century building. This would suggest that the farmhouse depicted on the tithe map (1) was demolished and rebuilt on the same spot.
