Full Description

Butley Hall, now a large roomy house, situated at one end of the village of Prestbury. In 1574 it is owned by John Davenport and he dies in possession of a "fourth part of the moiety of a messuage in Butley, called the Hall of Butley, and the lands thereto belonging". It is not improbable that this small estate had been purchased from the heirs of the Piggot's in the latter half of the sixteenth century (see CHER 1658/1). In 1625 "a messuage called the Hall of Butley" was sold to John Hobson of Over Alderley. In 1735 it is inhabited by Charles Legh and in 1755 by Robert Watts. From 1777-91 it was the residence of the Downes of Shrigley. In the early nineteenth century it was the residence of the Rev. J Rowlls Browne, the vicar of Prestbury, prior to it's sale in 1861 to WC Brocklehurst Esq, the MP for Macclesfield.
