Ralph Buckley in his will of October 1601 gave money to the poor of Wrenbury and also directed his executors to build a school-house near the Parish Church. He also gave £10 per annum for seven years towards maintaining a master there. However, other sources suggest that the school was not built before 1605. The free school was further endowed by George Palyn who instructed that £10 per annum should go towards the maintenance of a schoolmaster. The old school was later used as a Sunday School and was lent by the vicar for public meetings etc. The site of the old school was sold to the Church and consecrated for use as a graveyard.
