Description
The desk-based assessment indicated that at least part of the application area may have once been included within the churchyard of St. Margaret's church. Further, the documentary sources suggested that the remains of an early seventeenth century school-house lay close-by. Accordingly, two small archaeological test pits were quickly dug in order to obtain a profile of the below ground deposits and to help in the assessment of the site's archaeological potential. These indicated that within the vicinity of the area of the proposed development the archaeological potential is good. However, no deposits of archaeological significance were observed within the application area and, in consideration of this and the very substantial and protective depth of soil accumulation over the site, no further archaeological assessment or monitoring was required.
