Monument record 7422/1 - Roman Road, Chester Business Park Excavations

Please read our .

Summary

During excavations in 2003 at the Chester Business Park (MBNA Development) a Roman road (Context 1819) was recorded. The road appears to have facilitated the development of the site itself and probably also provided an impetus for agricultural development in the broader area. The road ran east to west, and is assumed to have connected with one of the main roads heading into Chester. The field system to the north (Phase 4 in this sequence) seemed to have stopped well before the edge of the road and for this reason is thought to have been laid out after the road had been constructed.

The field system to the north seemed to have stopped well before the edge of the road and for this reason is thought to have been laid out after the road had been constructed. A precursor track or road, possibly associated with the Iron Age pits (CHER 7421), may have existed prior to the construction of the Roman road

The remains of a Roman road , comprising a poorly preserved metalled surface and two outer ditches, ran east to west along the southern edge of the development site. Although only well preserved in the south east of the site, it was relatively substantial at between 5 and 6.5m wide
