Full Description

Archaeological investigation at Helsby hillfort in 2011 carried out as part of the Habitats and Hillforts Project identified the possible remains of a World War II Observation Post in the southwest corner of the hillfort. The evidence comprised a subcircular pit measuring 6m in diameter and 0.7m deep and interpreted as the remains of the observation post and a small linear trench running east from the area of the subcircular pit tentatively interpreted as a cable trench.

Further features were identified to the east comprising two rectangular platforms on top of the eastern bank measuring 7.5m east-west and 3.5m north-south tentatively interpreted as contemporary or later structures. (2)
