Summary

During the Tower Wharf site excavations in 2005, a 'massive ditch' was recorded, and seen to stretch to at least 20m. The excavators concluded that the ditch was likely to have been related to the Civil War siegeworks, also in this area.

Full Description

During the Tower Wharf site excavations in 2005, what was reported as a 'massive ditch' was recorded in Trench 5. The ditch was 5m wide, 3m deep. Its full length was not established, although it was also noted in Trench 12, indicating it stretched at least 20m (1). The unrelated backfill of the ditch contained eighteenth century pottery. The excavators concluded that the ditch was likely to have been related to the Civil War siegeworks, also in this area (1).
