Summary

Evidence of a possible Roman structure was encountered during construction to the rear of Stanley Place in 1962. The evidence included two sandstone walls, some sandstone rubble and a mortar foundation. Dating was provided by a quantity of Roman pottery.

Evidence of a Roman structure was recorded in 1962 during the construction of a new building to the rear of 8-12 Stanley Place. The evidence comprised traces of a mortared foundation in trench 1 and two sandstone walls in trench 2 on a similar alignment to the mortar foundation. In addtion, a quantity of sandstone rubble and tile chips were recovered. The features were dated by the recovery of some Roman pottery, however they are not discussed in detail.
