Archaeological recording of a wall abutting the present City Walls to the rear of 25 Newgate Street was carried out in 2003. Although no definitive dating evidence was identified, the wall appears to be of some antiquity with three main phases of construction predating the 18th century.

The earliest phase of construction comprised a rubble core with later, more regular, sandstone masonry surrounding it. The sandstone wall was then capped with a string of long blocks. The most recent phase of construction was the addition of several courses of modern brick.
