Archaeological investigations at Tower Wharf in 2005 identified widespread agricultural activity comprising a buried ploughsoil containing fragments of Roman pottery.
The evidence comprised a buried plough soil from trench 4 recorded across the length of the entire trench and in trench 5 at a depth of 1.4m below present ground level to the west of trench 4. Further traces of cultivation soils were also recorded in trenches 6 and 13 adjacent to the canal and in trench 12 at the south end of trench 5.
A broad ditch was also recorded cutting trench 5 and extending into trench 12 containing numerous fragments of Roman pottery and roof tile.
