Summary

A Malt Store belonging to the Chester Northgate Brewery Co. The Malt Store and it's associated buildings are clearly depicted on the 1874 map of the City, on the east side of Lower Bridge Street, north of Duke Street and south of the playground associated with St Olave's. It is possible that the buisness was utilising some or all of the three storey jettied timber-framed buildings which fronted Lower Bridge Street, though one building had an industrial character and may be a replacement. "Probably sometime during the early post-medieval period, the site became occupied by a group of three-storey jettied timber-framed buildings, which were illustrated by Louise Rayner (1832-1924). The date of this painting is unknown, although it was probably undertaken before 1874,………..the buildings were then in use as a ‘Malt Store’, belonging to the Chester Northgate Brewery Co."
