Full Description
Archaeological investigations at No 12 St John Street in 1908 following the discovery of the Roman fortress wall (CHER 8206/11) identified evidence of a narrow footway between the wall and the extra mural ditch.
The evidence consisted of a narrow pebbled surface of small boulders and measuring 1.28m across immediately adjacent to the wall. Newstead suggested this may have formed a temporary footway used during the construction of the defences. (1)
