Full Description
Archaeological investigations at the south east angle tower in 2012 recorded evidence of several brick foundations probably relating to post medieval structures known to have existed in this area.
The excavations were carried out in advance of landscaping and enhancement to the area and required the excavations of 26 small trenches across the area each measuring 0.50m by 0.50m with the aim of identifying the depth of archaeological survival. (1)
The evidence consisted of brick foundations from trench 4 at a depth of 0.18m, trench 16 at a depth of 0.20m, trench 22 at a depth of 0.40m, trench 23 at a depth of 0.45m and from trench 25 at a depth of 0.35m. Further traces of post medieval structures were recorded during the subsequent monitoring work over the site. Historical accounts note post medieval structures in this area until the late 19th century and it is likely these features relate to them. Given the limited nature of the test pits it was not possible to investigate these features further. (1)
