Full Description

Archaeological investigations at the south east angle tower in 2012 recorded evidence of several features of uncertain date.

The excavations were carried out in advance of landscaping and enhancement to the area and required the excavations of 26 small trenches across the area each measuring 0.50m by 0.50m with the aim of identifying the depth of archaeological survival. (1)

The evidence consisted of a possible pit in trench 1 at a depth of 0.10m below the present ground level, a sandstone structure in trench 2 at a depth of 0.08m, stone foundations in trench 17 at a depth of 0.25m and stone rubble spread from trench 18 at a depth of 0.45m. Given the limited nature of the test pits it was not possible to investigate these features further. (1)
