Full Description
Archaeological investigations at the south east angle tower in 2012 recorded evidence of a surface or road of possible Roman date.
The excavations were carried out in advance of landscaping and enhancement to the area and required the excavations of 26 small trenches across the area each measuring 0.50m by 0.50m with the aim of identifying the depth of archaeological survival. The evidence from trench 5 consisted of a pebble surface [510] 0.03m thick at a depth of 0.26m below present ground level below. The pebble surface was laid directly on a rather thicker layer of sandstone rubble [511] approximately 0.12m thick. (1)
The evidence was interpreted as a possible Roman road or surface running between the south east angle of the fortress and the Roman amphitheatre (1)
