Building record 12000/34 - Chester City Walls - Wall between Bridgegate and County Hall

Please read our .

Summary

This section of the southern part of the city walls extends from the Bridgegate to the eastern boundary of the property of the County Hall, approximately 70m in length. The medieval stonework originated in the late eleventh to early twelfth century, but was converted to a raised promenade between 1702 and 1708. It can be assumed to have been subject to periodic repair throughout the medieval and post medieval periods, but was altered significantly on the demolition of the former fortified gateway and seventeenth century water supply tower for the building of the present Bridgegate (CHER 12000/32). The wall was realigned in the 1830s under Joseph Turner for the City Corporation, for the improvement of the land adjoining the County Gaol.
