Full Description

This relatively short section of the northern city wall extends from St Martin’s Gate (CHER 12000/7) to Morgan’s Mount (CHER 12000/8). This part of the wall is on the line of the north wall (specifically its north-east corner) of the Roman legionary fortress, adjoining the former north-west corner tower. The visible standing structure today is partly medieval, dating to the late eleventh or early twelfth century, converted to a raised promenade between 1702 and 1708 and subsequently repaired. It is probably safe to assume that this section of the walls, like many others, were subject to regular repair and alteration throughout the medieval and post medieval period. The outline of the Roman north-west corner tower (CHER 8241) is marked in sets let into the pavement at the corner of St Martin's Way and Water Tower Street. The masonry of the medieval wall shows much subsequent repair. Opposite Morgan's Mount is a stone stair of two flights of steps that may indicate the projection of a former tower. This length of the wall is approximately 30m long and 2m wide (7, 8).
