Full Description

The relatively short section of the city walls between Pemberton’s Parlour and St Martin’s Gate originally dates to the late eleventh or early twelfth centuries, but was, like CHER 12000/4, converted to a raised promenade between 1701 and 1708 with subsequent repairs. It is probably safe to assume that this section of the walls, like many others, were subject to regular repair and alteration throughout the medieval and post medieval period. The south face of the wall has a 15m length with five courses of large stones set back a little from the face of adjoining lengths west and east, with a continuous course of corbels immediately below the wall-walk that are thought to have possibly been the base for the former inner timber palisade. This portion of the wall is approximately 80m long, and the wall walk is 2m wide. In 1966, it was broken by the construction of St Martin’s Gate and the ring road (6).
