Summary

During excavations at the amphitheatre site between 2001 and 2003 (ECH4299), part of the foundations of St John's House (CHER 11035) were revealed, and while they were being excavated, a void below the foundation was identified following the removal of sandstone slabs at the base of the former structure. The excavators suggested that it may have been a redundant well.

Full Description

During excavations at the amphitheatre site between 2001 and 2003 (ECH4299), part of the foundations of St John's House (CHER 11035) were revealed, and while they were being excavated, a void below the foundation was identified following the removal of sandstone slabs at the base of the former structure. Probing with a ranging rod revealed that the void was at least 0.3m deep and had a diameter of approximately 1m. Because of safety issues, the feature was not explored further (1).
